There are several things that causes dyspepsia, excessive stomach acid that comes out, the defense of stomach wall is weak, infection by Helicobacter pylori (a type of bacteria that live in the stomach in small amounts), gastrointestinal movement disorders, and psychological stress.

Among the causes of dyspepsia, the most common is an ulcer, or peptic ulcers. Heartburn is caused by various factors. Symptoms rise from an excessive increase of gastric acid in the stomach. This situation can be caused by certain foods and drinks, such as eating foods that are too spicy, sour, drink coffee, or consume alcohol. Besides that the physical and psychological stress can also stimulate the production of excess stomach acid, then can cause ulcer too.

Besides those already mentioned above, there are many more causes of heartburn, such as injuries to the esophagus, stomach and throat cancer, biliary tract disease, pancreatitis, drug consumption, liver cancer, systemic disease (diabetes, thyroid) and others.

Dyspeptic symptoms that accompany not only the pain in the gut, but can also be nausea, bloating, stomach feel full, vomiting, early satiety, frequent belching, diarrhea, and chest pain. Someone who feels chest pain often has mistaken that as a symptom of heart disease.

If the symptoms in the above happens again and again to you, then it need to be aware that heartburn that you feel is not the usual heartburn or not some kind of temporary flood response of gastric acid due to the presence of spicy food. Probably you suffer from GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease).

Gastro esophageal reflux disease is a pathological condition as a result of reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus, with symptoms due to involvement of the esophagus, pharynx, larynx and respiratory tract.

If the valve of gastro esophageal not functioning properly, the channel is not closed tightly or loosely, so stomach acid can flow back to the top, into the esophagus. This is can cause GERD.
